United Nations/Electronic Data Interchange for Administration, Commerce and Transport (UN/EDIFACT) is the internationally recognized standard for electronic data interchange (EDI), developed and maintained under the auspices of the United Nations.
UN/EDIFACT defines a set of structured message formats that enable organizations across industries such as finance, logistics, manufacturing, construction, healthcare, and government to exchange business information electronically in a consistent and standardized way.
Each UN/EDIFACT message type is identified by a unique six-letter code, known as the message identifier. This code represents a concise short name that describes the purpose of the message (for example, INVOIC for “Invoice” or ORDERS for “Purchase Order”).
This standardized approach streamlines global communication between trading partners, improves data accuracy, and reduces manual processing in international trade and administrative transactions.
